A lot of attention has been focused recently on the plight of innocent people condemned to death row. But these cases, however tragic, represent only the tiniest tip of the wrongful convicted iceberg. Consider that people on death row have been afforded the most stringent legal safeguards our system can provide. If so many of them are later exonerated, how many more innocents are imprisoned in non-capital cases where they did not receive extra safeguards? How big is this problem? Nobody is sure. Despite all the crime statistics compiled in Washington, no one tracks wrongful convictions. The system doesn't want to know.
